Sports Nutrition Lesson

Last spring, through my Practicum in Sports Nutrition course, I was grateful to co-lead a sports nutrition workshop for team of Division I female lacrosse players at Manhattan College in New York. We educated the group on fuel optimization, covering fundamental nutrition and hydration principles to support athlete performance during the season. We hoped to address a common issue among female athletes —inadequate fueling! It was a very enjoyable Saturday morning – we tried to make the presentation interactive, motivational, and personable – filled with energizing snacks, team games, group discussions, and goal setting activities. It was rewarding to witness the lasting impression on the coach and players, who later expressed food to be a positive resource for the team’s performance. Major topics covered included:

1) What is Energy Balance and Low Energy Availability?

2) Benefits of Fuel Optimization

3) Building a Performance Plate

4) Fueling Timeline - Four Bucket Method
