Hiking

A Thinking Space and Happy Place

Above all, hiking is my favorite past time. Nature is very special to me —water, mountains, seas, beaches, and streams bring an unparalleled sense of inner joy, fulfillment, and revitalization. And by nature, I do not mean the concrete jungle of NYC (although I find myself in Central Park almost daily!)

For me, nature has a way of self-empowering. It’s purity. It’s magnificence. It’s beauty —I am always left in awe while traversing through the woods, climbing a mountain, or walking along a stream. So many things seem sophisticated in this world. Yet when I hike to the top of a mountain or wander along a new trail, I am able to let go of all of that. I observe the world’s simplicity, and the core elements which have created and shaped it. I have had opportunity to reflect deeply in this space, to breathe, and to slow down. Being out in nature brings an air of serenity, calmness, and solace — it is my thinking space and my happy place.

While I often enjoy my own company, I value the accompaniment of others during my outdoor ventures. I value mutually sharing and enjoying the surrounding scenery (which cannot be replicated in pictures!) and engaging in deep, thoughtful conversations. I have learned a lot about others while hiking — with little cell- phone service and a long trails to follow, I fall into a rhythm of steps and words. I ask new questions, hear new stories, and receive new advice and wisdom.

I have learned that there is always something that brings us to the trails. Maybe it’s loss. Maybe it’s curiosity. Maybe it’s reflection. Whether we venture out for the purpose of celebrating life, exploring, achieving, socializing, or wildlife watching, there is something we all reap from being in nature’s presence.

Below features some snapshots of my favorite hikes —both near and far away. Whether it be 1 mile or 9,000 miles in distance, my first time there or my hundredth, I am always graced by the world’s natural wonders.
